If you own or lease a Chevrolet, GMC, or Cadillac truck or SUV and have experienced jerking, hesitation, rough shifting, or sudden loss of power, you are not alone. These issues have been widely reported and, in some cases, have led to official recalls and technical service bulletins issued by General Motors. Depending on your situation, these problems may qualify your vehicle for relief under California’s Lemon Law.
The following GM models have been the subject of repeated complaints related to 8-speed and 10-speed automatic transmissions:
Chevrolet: Silverado 1500, Silverado 2500HD, Silverado 3500HD, Colorado, Tahoe, Suburban
GMC: Sierra 1500, Sierra 2500HD, Sierra 3500HD, Canyon, Yukon, Yukon XL, Yukon Denali, Sierra Denali
Cadillac: Escalade, Escalade ESV
Owners have reported a consistent pattern of symptoms, including hesitation while accelerating, hard or delayed shifting, transmission slipping, lurching forward from a stop, and loss of power while driving or towing. These problems often begin early in ownership and, in many cases, persist despite multiple repair attempts.
In November 2024, General Motors recalled approximately 462,000 vehicles, including certain 2020–2022 GMC Sierra and 2021 GMC Yukon models. The recall addressed a faulty transmission control valve that could cause the rear wheels to lock up, creating a serious safety risk. In addition to formal recalls, GM has issued multiple technical service bulletins to dealerships addressing transmission concerns in Silverado, Sierra, Denali, Tahoe, Suburban, and Escalade models. These bulletins acknowledge ongoing drivetrain issues that standard repairs may not fully resolve.
While a recall can address specific safety defects, many owners report continued transmission problems even after recall-related repairs. Importantly, a recall is not required for a vehicle to qualify under the California Lemon Law. The law may apply when a defect substantially impairs the use, value, or safety of the vehicle, has required multiple repair attempts under warranty, or has resulted in the vehicle being out of service for an extended period.
California’s Lemon Law applies to vehicles that were (1) purchased new, (2) leased new, (3) sold as certified pre-owned by a manufacturer-authorized dealership with a manufacturer-backed warranty, or (4) sold as demonstrator or executive vehicles by a manufacturer-authorized dealer with the original new vehicle warranties intact. The law does not apply to vehicles sold used with only remaining time or mileage under the original new vehicle warranty. If your GM truck or SUV qualifies under these terms and has experienced significant transmission-related issues, you may be entitled to a refund, a replacement vehicle, or cash compensation.
If you are experiencing transmission problems in your Chevrolet, GMC, or Cadillac truck or SUV, it is important to keep all repair records and invoices from the dealership. These documents will be important in evaluating whether your vehicle meets the criteria under the California Lemon Law.
